What are you buying when you hire a video production company? Better equipment than your iPhone? The important feeling of a large crew? An editing suite in the art district with hipster vibes and a latte machine? Perhaps consider buying a fresh perspective from a qualified outsider.

In a previous post, I discussed why a company might choose to outsource a team of video production professionals.  But one of the things we didn’t touch on in that video was the idea of hiring a video production professional as an outsider’s voice. An experienced, yet neutral set of eyes to look at your company differently than maybe you or your employees do.

Oftentimes the number one thing considered in producing a video is cost.  I totally get that. As a small business owner myself it’s responsible – dare I say critical – to consider cost.  But the quality of the message matters too. And in my two decades of experience, the greatest value in hiring an outside company for video production may not be their fancy equipment or little black book of crew persons. Rather, it’s the minds, eyes and rich experiences that they bring to that message. An qualified outsider can bring to light certain blind spots you may have in your company’s thinking or presentation.  In the way that you put forward your message.

In the same way that you might hire a website consultant or a niche market specialist to handle particular aspects of your advertising, if you’re creating a video it’s invaluable to have an experienced video producer who can help you think through the “visual message” that you want to put forward in your video. And I assure you, before you waste time or money producing a video, you want to make sure you’re what you’re putting out there has the best chance of success.

It’s responsible - dare I say critical - to consider cost. But the quality of the message matters too.

Over the years at Digital Lunchbox, we’ve collaborated with a number of mid- to large sized companies to create videos that help them advance certain initiatives within their company. Russell Cellular, one of the top Verizon sales agents in America locations coast to coast is one of those companies we’ve helped.  Like a lot of larger companies they create media assets internally but when the need arises, they seek an outside vendor to create top notch video creative.  Naturally, image quality is a factor, that’s one reason to hire a video production company.  From my experiences with them, they see the value in having an outside expert viewpoint to execute their brand’s critical messages.  Since 2011, we’ve helped a rapidly growing company promote their unique values and culture to employees from Manhattan to San Diego and everywhere in between.

Whatever company or individual is producing YOUR next video, you need to ask: “is this video producer a trusted sounding board?  Do we trust them to be an ambassador of our brand?” That’s a topic we’ll expand on in a future video, so be on the lookout for that in the coming weeks!
